3 Shin Splints Stretches That Will Keep Your Splints at Bay!
3 Shin Splints Stretches You Need To Use!
Getting rid of shin splints has to involve stretching of some sort because stretching exercises have always been used by shin splints sufferers to aid recovery and the following three shin splints stretches will certainly make a speedy recovery much more likely.
Although these shin splints stretches will help you recover in the short term if you truly want to get rid of your shin splints for good then you really need to read my post: How to Get Rid Of Shin Splints Forever…and Not Only Until The Next Time!
Anyway…back to these stretches…the reason why stretches are so important in the recovery process is that they prevent a lot of the tension build up in the muscles and ligaments of the lower leg and in particular the shin area. This tension is what causes shin splints to occur so it is vitally important that they are performed on a regular basis.
Please note that you need to perform some kind of warm up exercise prior to carrying out these 3 shin splints stretches, as it will greatly assist in reducing the chances of muscle or tendon damage.
Shin Splints Stretch 1. Calf Stretches
The calf muscle is the largest muscle of the shin area and any tension will surely contribute towards a case of shin splints hence why it takes pride and place at number one in our selection of 3.
An easy way to stretch the calf is to stand on the curb-stone of a walkway, or pavement, (in fact any type of step will do, although make sure it’s solid and will not give way under your weight or move), with your heels hanging over the edge. Slowly move your body weight to your heels which will force your heels to dip below the curb. You should feel your calf muscles stretching. Once you have lowered your heels as far as you can comfortably you should hold this position for at least 20 seconds. Wait a short while and then repeat the stretch.
If your balance isn’t great, don’t try this stretch unless you are holding onto something, as you may cause yourself an unnecessary injury if you fall or accidentally stretch your calves too much.
Shin Splints Stretch 2. Tibialis Anterior Stretches (Shin Muscles to you and I!)
The shin muscle, as I like to call it, or the tibialis anterior for those who like their medical terms, can be stretched in a number of ways but the easiest is the following method. Again, it is advisable to find a railing or something similar to hold onto to help you with your balance. It may also be easier to perform this stretch without training shoes but that is completely down to you.
Sideways on from your support, place the leg you want to stretch a foot or so behind the other leg with the tops of your toes touching the ground, slowly assert pressure onto your stretching leg by attempting to move it forward, when doing so you will feel your shin muscle stretching. Simply repeat on the other leg.

Shin Splints Stretch 3. Seated Shin Stretch.
This is probably the easiest of all shin splints stretches and one that you can do frequently. When sitting on a seat place your lower legs as far back under the seat as you can do so comfortably with the balls of your feet touching the floor.
Doing just this one simple task you should be able to feel a deep stretching on the front of your shins, if needed you can press down onto the ball of your feet to stretch the muscle further.
Well there you have it…three simple stretching exercises that target the main muscles affected by shin splints, perform these on a regular basis and it should prevent shin splints occurring in most cases…however…as good as they may be they will never completely get rid of shin splints as they do not treat the underlying cause of your problem.
If you want to know how to get rid of shin splints for good then you will need to treat the actual cause of them, which can differ in each individual case. One way to get rid of shin splints for good is by implementing Gary Buchenic’s 5 Step treatment plan and you can find out more about Gary’s plan by Clicking Here.
Have a great shin splints free day!
